In a significant move to enhance India's digital skilling ecosystem, the government has launched the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) Platform in September 2023. This initiative represents a major leap forward in integrating skill development, education, employment, and entrepreneurship through a comprehensive digital platform.
SIDH is designed to serve as a one-stop solution for skill enhancement, offering a range of industry-relevant courses, job opportunities, and entrepreneurial support. The platform is built with a mobile-first approach, addressing diverse needs such as course discovery, scheme applications, apprenticeships, and job opportunities based on individual preferences and aspirations. It aims to strengthen India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) by seamlessly merging the Skill India and Digital India initiatives.
As of June 2024, SIDH has made substantial progress with approximately 88 lakh candidates registered. The platform has seen 9.59 lakh mobile app downloads and 7.63 lakh enrolments in online courses. It currently offers 752 online courses, featuring 7.37 lakh minutes of digital content accessible to learners. SIDH is envisioned to further integrate with the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector, providing learners and job seekers with enhanced access to entrepreneurship schemes.
In addition to SIDH, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched several other initiatives to promote digital and online skill training:
Skills Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) Project: Implemented by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), this project aims to improve the relevance and efficiency of skills training through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and apprenticeships. It includes digital content development for 14 trades and a pilot Virtual Reality (VR) project in five ITIs for trades like electrician, fitter, mechanic motor vehicle, and welder.
Bharatskills Portal: Launched to support digital skill development, this portal provides access to a vast array of educational materials, including 553 e-books, 337 question banks, 190 study material videos, and 6201 e-learning videos, all available in 12 regional languages.
Industry Partnerships: DGT has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with major IT tech companies such as IBM, CISCO, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft. These partnerships facilitate advanced training in technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics (BDA), Blockchain, and Cloud Computing. The Bharatskills portal supports around 23.7 lakh trainees with industry-ready courses.
Advanced Diploma Programs: In collaboration with IBM under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), DGT offers a 2-year Advanced Diploma (Vocational) program in IT, Networking, and Cloud Computing across 15 National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs).
Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, provided this update in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the government's commitment to advancing skill development through digital innovation and strategic partnerships.
