A 24-year-old man from Thane district was arrested on allegations of cheating 14 unemployed people out of Rs 14 lakh by falsely promising them jobs in the Railways, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as Lalit Shivnath Shakti, used social media accounts with fake names to advertise fraudulent job opportunities. Authorities apprehended him near Thane railway station on Monday based on a tip-off.

Inspectors discovered that Shakti produced counterfeit appointment letters and other documents to convince his victims. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shivraj Patil revealed that Shakti targeted educated unemployed youths and would switch off his phone after collecting funds and documents. The preliminary investigation suggests that Shakti operated alone, with no Railway staff implicated.

An FIR was filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita on July 27, and further investigations are underway.
