The Delhi Police announced on Thursday that they have decided to drop the more severe charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Manuj Kathuria, the SUV driver implicated in the tragic deaths at a coaching centre. This decision was conveyed to Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Kumar during a court session addressing an appeal against the denial of bail to Kathuria, following a magisterial court's ruling on Wednesday.
The judge has reserved his decision regarding Kathuria's second bail plea. Kathuria is accused of causing the drowning of three civil services aspirants in a basement that flooded after he allegedly drove through a rainwater-flooded street, which led to the inundation of the coaching centre.
The police have filed an FIR under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), excluding now the charge of culpable homicide, but including charges related to negligent conduct and voluntarily causing hurt.
