US officials arrested two Indian nationals, charged with intent to distribute controlled substances worth $10 million. Simranjit Singh, 28, and Gusimrat Singh, 19, were detained in Boston after being caught with over 400-kg of cocaine. The arrest highlights a major drug trafficking issue.
US officials have apprehended two Indian nationals in possession of drugs valued at USD 10 million, the Department of Justice has announced.
Simranjit Singh, 28, and Gusimrat Singh, 19, both residents of Fresno, California, face charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.
Both individuals appeared in a federal court in Boston on July 29 and are currently held in federal custody. Authorities discovered over 400 kg of suspected cocaine in their tractor trailer, valued at more than USD 10.5 million.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy described the drug haul as "disturbing and dangerous," noting that the defendants allegedly planned to distribute the narcotics across Massachusetts communities.
Charging documents indicate that the arrests took place on the evening of July 29, when a white tractor trailer arrived at a prearranged location in Andover to deliver methamphetamine to undercover agents. Simranjit and Gusimrat Singh allegedly handed off 65 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and were immediately taken into custody.
The charge of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a supervised release term between three years to life, and fines up to USD 1,000,000.
