Olympic Safety: French Authorities Report No Tangible Terror Threats

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that no tangible terror threats have been detected during the first week of the Olympic Games in Paris. About 200 individuals have been arrested, with substantial reductions in various crimes attributed to the increased police presence.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced Friday that authorities have not detected any tangible terror threats during the first week of the Olympic Games. During this period, security forces have arrested approximately 200 individuals for various crimes.

Darmanin disclosed the initial security statistics for the Paris Olympics during a visit to a police station in Saint-Denis, a northern suburb home to major venues like the Stade de France and the Olympic Aquatics Centre. He stated that 200 people have been apprehended since July 26, with 180 taken into police custody.

Some detainees included individuals who had the potential to commit attacks, particularly on the opening ceremony day, Darmanin said. However, no organized terror threats have been identified. He noted a 24% reduction in thefts involving violence and a 10% decrease in car thefts in Paris and its suburbs, attributing the overall reduction in petty crime to an increased police presence.

Darmanin will remain in a caretaker role at the Interior Ministry until a new government is formed following recent legislative elections. France has deployed around 30,000 police officers daily for Olympic security, with a peak of 45,000 for the opening ceremony.

In addition, security forces are supported by a 10,000-strong contingent of soldiers that has established the largest military camp in Paris since World War II. This arrangement ensures soldiers can reach any Olympic venue within 30 minutes.
