The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the deaths of 14 inmates at the city-run Asha Kiran shelter home last month. Revenue Minister Atishi highlighted that many of the deceased had comorbidities, while Lt Governor V K Saxena termed the fatalities an 'act of criminality against the most disadvantaged.'
According to official data, 25 inmates have died at the centre since February, which currently houses 980 'intellectually disabled' persons. Both BJP and Congress have accused the ruling AAP government of negligence, staging protests outside the facility.
Lt Governor Saxena has directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the state of affairs at all city-run homes. The preliminary magisterial report is expected within 24 hours, and if negligence is found, strict action will follow.
