National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has called for the immediate release of prisoners from Jammu and Kashmir who are being held without trial, according to a party statement.
The MP from Srinagar engaged with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Friday, advocating for the release of these detainees.
Mehdi's requests also included the transfer of undertrial prisoners back to Jammu and Kashmir jails.
In a letter delivered to Shah, Mehdi highlighted the urgency of addressing the prolonged detentions and underscored the necessity of ensuring timely and fair trials for all prisoners.
Mehdi noted that many of the incarcerated individuals are young and stressed that their continued detention negatively impacts their future careers and roles in nation-building.
He appealed to the government for their immediate release and emphasized the humanitarian need to transfer convicted and undertrial prisoners to facilities closer to their homes in the Valley, to alleviate physical and financial burdens on their families.
