Russia Mourns Wagner Fighters Killed in Mali Battle

In the shadow of the Kremlin, a somber tribute took place on Sunday, where more than 70 Russians paid homage to Wagner fighters killed in a major battle with Mali rebels and Islamist militants. The confrontation, one of the group's deadliest in Africa, saw significant casualties.

The Wagner group announced last month that its fighters and Malian soldiers suffered heavy losses during intense skirmishes against Tuareg rebels and Islamist fighters from an al Qaeda affiliate near Mali's border with Algeria. Malian sources confirmed that at least 84 Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers were killed in the conflict.

In Moscow, just a stone's throw from the Kremlin, dozens of Russians gathered to mourn the fallen. Witnesses reported seeing individuals dressed in military attire adorned with Wagner badges kneeling before pictures of the deceased. Amid the Wagner flags emblazoned with their motto 'Blood, Honor, Motherland, Courage,' candles were lit, and red carnations were laid in tribute. Emotions ran high, with some visitors weeping openly before the memorial.

Despite the poignancy of the event, none of the attendees would provide comments to Reuters. Mali continues to grapple with a protracted Islamist insurgency following coups in 2020 and 2021. Authorities maintain that Russian forces in the region are trainers aiding local troops with Russian-supplied equipment, not Wagner mercenaries.
