In the past six days, the country has seen a wave of lawlessness, with right-wing activists using social media to stir anger over a stabbing incident at a dance class that resulted in the deaths of three girls and injuries to many others. The violence has been primarily directed at immigrants and Muslims.

On Sunday, enraged mobs targeted two hotels accommodating asylum seekers, smashing windows and setting fires before police intervened to disperse the crowds and evacuate residents. During Monday's Cobra meeting, police chiefs and government ministers are expected to formulate a strategy to prevent further violence.

“As Keir said, as every decent person has said, I think these are far-right thugs who attacked some of the most vulnerable people in our communities and there is absolutely no excuse,” Oliver Coppard, the mayor of South Yorkshire, told the BBC. “There can never be any excuse for trying to burn to death 200 of the most vulnerable people in our community.” The Home Office, responsible for law and order, has unveiled a new “rapid response process” to provide increased protection to mosques and quickly address any threats against places of worship.
