Top Military Officials Arrested in Russia's Fraud Probe
The director of Patriot Park and a top Defence Ministry official were arrested on fraud charges. They allegedly embezzled funds intended for the park, designed to showcase Russia's military capabilities. This follows a series of arrests and dismissals of high-ranking officials criticized for mismanagement and corruption.
The director of Patriot Park, Vyacheslav Akhmedov, and a high-ranking Defence Ministry official, Maj. Gen. Vladimir Shesterov, have been arrested on fraud charges, according to Russia's Investigative Committee on Monday.
The inquiry alleges that Akhmedov and Shesterov embezzled government funds designated for Patriot Park, a sprawling military exhibition facility launched in 2015 to promote patriotism among Russian youth. The site features weapon displays, museums, and even a Russian Orthodox cathedral.
The arrests are part of a broader crackdown on military officials, many connected to ex-Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who were accused of corruption and mismanagement following Russia's military setbacks in Ukraine. Shoigu himself has faced criticism and remained in a high-profile Security Council position while his associates faced legal actions.
