Russian Official Warns Ukraine: Delay in Peace Talks Will Be Costly

A top Russian official has warned Ukraine that delaying peace talks would result in harsher terms. Russia's demands include Ukraine ceding land and renouncing NATO membership, both of which Ukraine has rejected. The official emphasized that Ukraine continues to lose territory and personnel, complicating the situation further.

In a stark warning issued on Tuesday, a high-ranking Russian official told Ukraine that postponing peace negotiations would lead to more stringent conditions for its people. Russia insists that any peace talks must involve Ukraine ceding land—currently making up a fifth of its territory—and giving up any aspirations to join NATO, terms which Ukraine has firmly rejected.

Sergei Shoigu, who serves as the secretary of Russia’s Security Council and was recently its defense minister, stated that since June 14, when President Vladimir Putin proposed peace terms, Ukraine had lost significant territory and lives. “The window of opportunity for Ukraine is narrowing,” Shoigu said in a broadcast on state television, pointing out that the longer Ukraine delayed, the more it stood to lose.

Despite having entered Ukraine in 2022, Russia now controls approximately 18% of Ukraine, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. Russia also asserts control over several southeastern regions, which Putin argues Ukraine must cede entirely. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba recently reiterated that Kyiv is open to talks as long as Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity are upheld.
