Rocket Attack in Iraq Injures US Service Members

Five American service members and two contractors were wounded when rockets targeted a military base in Iraq, US officials disclosed on Tuesday, elaborating on Monday's incident.

According to officials, five of the injured are undergoing treatment at al-Asad airbase, while two have been evacuated. All seven are reported to be in stable condition, although details regarding the evacuees remain undisclosed.

This attack is part of a growing number of strikes by Iranian-backed militias amid increasing Middle East tensions. However, it's not linked to the recent assassinations of key Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, which are believed to be orchestrated by Israel.

Officials, speaking anonymously to discuss military matters, noted an uptick in attacks on bases housing US forces in Iraq and Syria after a lull following the deadly strike on a Jordan base in January, which led to US retaliatory actions.

From October to January, a group called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed various attacks, retaliating against Washington's support for Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza and aiming to expel US troops from the region.
