ESIC Super Specialty Hospital, Sanathnagar, Hyderabad, has reached a significant milestone in medical science and organ transplantation by conducting its first in-house cadaver organ retrieval on August 6, 2024. This landmark achievement marks a major advancement in the hospital's medical services and its commitment to saving lives through organ donation.
The donor, a 45-year-old male who was declared brain dead at ESIC Sanathnagar, provided the opportunity for this groundbreaking procedure. Under the guidance of Dr. Samson and his neurosurgery team, the donor's family was educated about the importance of organ donation and provided their consent. The organs were then allocated by Jeevandhan to ESIC and other institutions.
The successful retrieval involved the removal of kidneys and a liver, with Dr. Madhu, Dr. Sandeep, and their teams handling the organ harvesting. The kidneys were transplanted into two patients—one recipient, a 50-year-old female ESIC beneficiary who had been on dialysis for four years, received one kidney. The liver and another kidney were allocated to Osmania General Hospital, where they were transplanted into two additional patients, thus saving three lives in total.
The transplant procedures at ESIC were carried out by chief transplant surgeons Dr. Jagdeeshwar and Dr. Pandu Ranga Rao. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Nagarjuna, and the nephrology team was overseen by Dr. Dhanalaxmi.
This groundbreaking procedure not only demonstrates the hospital's capability to handle complex medical procedures with precision and care but also opens new avenues for ESIC to receive organ allocations from Jeevandhan. This development will enable the hospital to offer more patients the chance to receive life-saving transplants, thus improving their quality of life.
The success of this in-house cadaver organ retrieval underscores ESIC Super Specialty Hospital's dedication to advancing healthcare services. The meticulous planning and coordination among doctors, administrative staff, nurses, and paramedics highlight the hospital's advanced infrastructure and the expertise of its medical professionals. This achievement reflects ESIC's ongoing commitment to enhancing its capabilities and providing superior medical care to its community.
