Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald has intervened in the controversial transfer of George “Geweld” Thomas, a notorious leader of the 28s prison gang, to Helderstroom Prison in the Western Cape. The decision comes after significant concern from community leaders about the potential risks posed by Thomas's presence in the province.
Thomas, who is serving a sentence of at least 175 years for over 50 serious charges including multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, racketeering, and other crimes, was initially moved to the Western Cape facility despite the potential danger to local communities.
In response to the outcry, Minister Groenewald stated, “We will work with communities on an ongoing basis to improve the system and maximize the positive change it can bring to vulnerable communities.” The Department of Correctional Services has since redirected Thomas to an alternative maximum-security facility.
The department has committed to a thorough investigation to determine the reasons behind the prisoner’s transfer and to address any procedural irregularities. Additionally, Minister Groenewald met with representatives from the Cape Crime Crisis Coalition to discuss community concerns and explore interventions aimed at reducing the influence of criminal elements in areas affected by gang violence.
The department's swift action underscores its commitment to balancing prison management with community safety, ensuring that high-risk inmates are managed appropriately to avoid exacerbating local crime issues.
