Four Former Hyatt Employees Charged in Death of Black Man in Milwaukee
Four ex-Hyatt Regency hotel employees in Milwaukee face murder charges for the death of a Black man, D’Vontaye Mitchell, who was pinned to the ground for several minutes. The incident recalls George Floyd's death, igniting concerns of police brutality and racism. The accused men face significant prison time if convicted.
Four former employees of the Hyatt Regency hotel in Milwaukee are facing felony murder charges for the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, a 43-year-old Black man. The Milwaukee County District Attorney charged security guards Todd Erickson, Brandon Turner, Devin Johnson-Carson, and bellman Herbert Williamson.
Mitchell's widow, DeAsia Harmon, expressed relief but remained unsatisfied with the delayed charges. The altercation, reminiscent of George Floyd’s death, involved Mitchell being pinned in a prone position for several minutes before dying of restraint asphyxia.
The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide, noting Mitchell also had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system. The four accused, who lost their jobs at Hyatt, could face up to 15 years and nine months in prison if convicted.
