The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is set to be reviewed by a joint committee of Parliament following objections from opposition parties. The bill's referral to the committee was decided by the government on Thursday.
Speaker Om Birla announced that he would confer with leaders of political parties to establish the committee. When one House opts to send a bill to a joint committee, the other House is notified to select members for the panel.
The committee reviews the bill clause by clause, allowing members to propose amendments. The committee can also take testimonies from associations, public bodies, or experts. After review, the committee submits its report to the House. Members in disagreement may provide dissenting opinions. Past referrals include bills on land acquisition, insolvency, financial resolution, and forest conservation.
