UN Warns of Expanding Terrorist Influence Across Africa
A UN counterterrorism official warned the Security Council that the Islamic State group and affiliated terrorist organizations could monopolize a vast region in Africa, from Mali to northern Nigeria. The official highlighted notable expansions and increased attacks by IS-affiliated groups in several African nations, as well as in Iraq and Syria.
A senior United Nations counterterrorism official has alerted the Security Council to the potential domination of a large expanse of Africa by the Islamic State group and its affiliated terrorist organizations.
Despite no direct link between an alleged plan to attack Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna and these groups, Austrian authorities noted that the suspects appeared to be influenced by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida.
In his routine report, Vladimir Voronkov, undersecretary for counterterrorism, detailed that IS affiliates have expanded their operational territories in West Africa and the Sahel. Voronkov warned that a stretch from Mali to northern Nigeria could fall under extremist control if their influence perseveres.
Additionally, these affiliates had expanded into Mozambique, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, leading to a significant rise in civilian casualties. Voronkov reported that ISIS-K, the Afghan affiliate, has bolstered its financial and logistical capacity, increasing recruitment and operations in Iraq and Syria.
