Tension escalated at the Sitalkuchi border area of Cooch Behar, West Bengal, when nearly a thousand Bangladeshi nationals attempted to cross into India. Tension gripped the Sitalkuchi border area in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, early Friday when around a thousand Bangladeshi nationals attempted to cross into India seeking refuge. However, their efforts were thwarted by the Border Security Force (BSF), which maintained strict surveillance.
The Bangladeshi nationals, reportedly Hindus, converged around 400 meters from the fenced border along a water body in Larumpur district. Despite their efforts, the vigilant 157th Battalion of the BSF stationed at Pathantuli village prevented any illegal entry. The Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) subsequently removed them from the area.
Due to recent severe anti-government protests in Bangladesh, leading to significant minority persecution and political upheaval, instances of attempted crossings have surged. The Indian government, led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has established a high-level committee to oversee the eastern border situation and ensure the protection of Indian citizens and minority communities.
