Mizoram and Assam Commit to Peaceful Border Resolution

Mizoram and Assam have pledged to maintain peace along their border, aiming to resolve a long-standing boundary dispute. In their first meeting since November 2022, both states reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration, zero tolerance towards contraband transport, and the organization of joint cultural and sports events to foster better relations.

Mizoram and Assam have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace along their inter-state border in a bid to resolve the decades-long boundary dispute that has plagued the northeastern states. The states convened for border talks on Friday, their first in nearly 20 months.

Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora characterized the discussions as positive and conducive, highlighting both states' determination to find amicable solutions. Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga shared optimism for a resolution, marking cautious progress in talks that have seen renewed vigor since the Zoram People's Movement took power last December.

A noteworthy aspect of the meeting was the mutual agreement to continue zero tolerance towards the smuggling of areca nuts from neighboring countries. Furthermore, both sides agreed to hold joint cultural and sports festivals before March 31, 2024, to foster better relations. The next round of talks is slated to occur in Guwahati by March 31, 2025.
