Iran is gearing up to enforce Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's order to 'harshly punish' Israel over the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, local news agencies reported on Friday, citing a Revolutionary Guards deputy commander.

'The supreme leader's orders regarding the harsh punishment of Israel and revenge for the blood of martyr Ismail Haniyeh are clear and explicit ... and they will be implemented in the best possible way,' stated Ali Fadavi, as reported by Iranian media. Iran and Hamas accuse Israel of carrying out Haniyeh's assassination on July 31. Israel, however, has neither claimed nor denied the assassination, raising fears that the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip could broaden into a wider Middle East war.

When asked about Fadavi's remarks, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby stated that the U.S. stands ready to defend Israel with ample resources in the region, saying, 'When we hear rhetoric like that we've got to take it seriously, and we do.' Meanwhile, Iran’s U.N. mission emphasized that its response to Haniyeh's killing was separate from Gaza ceasefire efforts. The U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have urged Israel and Hamas to engage in negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.
