Philippines Urges China to De-escalate South China Sea Tensions After 'Dangerous' Actions
The Philippines has called on Beijing to de-escalate tensions in the South China Sea after Chinese aircraft executed dangerous maneuvers. Manila's military criticized the actions as part of a pattern by China to assert its territorial claims. The Philippines urges China to adhere to international law and cooperation agreements.
The Philippines urged Beijing on Monday to heed calls to de-escalate tensions in the South China Sea following what it described as 'very dangerous' actions by its air force. This appeal comes after both nations agreed to better manage maritime disputes.
According to Manila's military, two Chinese aircraft performed dangerous maneuvers and dropped flares in the path of Philippine air force aircraft conducting a routine patrol over the contested Scarborough Shoal on Thursday. China's air force actions are viewed as part of a 'continuous pattern' by Beijing to assert its claims and presence in the South China Sea, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro noted.
The Philippines' National Security Council also called on China to 'cease all forms of provocative and hazardous acts,' emphasizing adherence to international law. Despite China’s claims, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr condemned the actions, which his foreign minister said Manila would formally protest. The Philippines remains steadfast in patrolling its exclusive economic zone, asserting its maritime rights.
