U.S. Advocates for Continued Gaza Peace Talks Amid Hamas Uncertainty
The U.S. State Department expects Gaza peace talks to proceed as planned, despite Hamas's initial hesitation. Mediators including the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar are pushing for a ceasefire agreement and a hostage-release deal, though obstacles remain. The objective is to finalize these negotiations by August 15.
The U.S. remains optimistic that Gaza peace talks will proceed as scheduled, the State Department announced Monday, expressing confidence in the possibility of reaching a ceasefire deal despite Hamas's recent uncertainties.
On Sunday, Hamas urged mediators to build on previous discussions rather than initiating new negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. Last week, leaders from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar called for Israel and Hamas to engage in talks by August 15, aiming to finalize both a ceasefire and a hostage-release agreement.
State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel stressed that the U.S. anticipates the talks to continue, highlighting America's commitment to working with all parties involved. However, Patel did not confirm if discussions would proceed without Hamas's participation. The efforts are part of a three-phase ceasefire proposal introduced by President Joe Biden in May.
