NGT Criticizes Assam Commando Battalion Construction Violating Forest Conservation Act

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has raised concerns over the construction of a building for the Assam Police commando battalion in violation of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. The NGT awaits a report from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on the issue, initiated by RTI activist Rohit Choudhury.

A bench comprising Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and Expert Member Dr Arun Kumar Verma noted the violation, highlighting that the MoEFCC has yet to provide a report on the infraction.

Triggered by complaints from RTI activist Rohit Choudhury, the case focuses on the unauthorized diversion of 28 hectares within the Geleky Reserve Forest for constructing a battalion building without MoEFCC approval.
