The violence occurred in the Rutshuru territory of North Kivu province amid battles between the M23 rebel group and Wazalendo fighters, who often assist Congolese security forces, noted Isaac Kibira, an administrative head in Rutshuru. 'The M23 rebels were attacked by young Wazalendo,' Kibira remarked. 'Unfortunately, seven civilians perished.' Another skirmish resulted in a vehicle being set ablaze, claiming the lives of nine passengers.

Officials emphasized that none of the deceased villagers were involved in the fighting. The conflict reignites concerns about the durability of a cease-fire that began on August 4, aimed at halting regional hostilities and providing aid to millions in need. Past cease-fires between the government and rebels have also been breached.
