Trump Seeks Delay in Sentencing Amidst Election Interference Concerns

Donald Trump, in a motion through his lawyer, is requesting the delay of his sentencing in a New York hush money case until after the November presidential election. The defense argues the delay is necessary to avoid perceived election interference and to provide adequate time to evaluate judicial decisions and subsequent legal actions.

Donald Trump has filed a motion asking the judge in his New York hush money criminal case to postpone his sentencing until after the November presidential election.

In a public letter on Thursday, Trump's lawyer suggested that sentencing him as scheduled on September 18 — seven weeks before Election Day — could be seen as election interference.

Trump's lawyer, Todd Blanche, argued that delaying the sentencing would give Trump more time to weigh next steps following Judge Juan M. Merchan's expected ruling on September 16 regarding the defense's request to overturn the verdict based on a recent Supreme Court immunity ruling.

Blanche stressed that there is no reason to rush. If the sentencing is postponed until after the election, it would reduce potential issues regarding the integrity of future proceedings.

Judge Merchan, confident in his impartiality despite allegations of conflict of interest, has yet to rule on the delay request. The Manhattan District Attorney's office, which prosecuted the case, declined to comment.

Trump was convicted in May of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels in 2016. Trump argues that the payments were for legal work and insists the case is politically motivated.
