Protests Erupt in Bihar After Dalit Girl's Murder

Twelve individuals were apprehended in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Sunday after a protest against the murder of a Dalit girl escalated into violent clashes with police. The young girl's mutilated body had been discovered a day after her kidnapping on August 11.

During the procession in the Paru area, protestors tried to incite villagers to gherao the police station. Security personnel's attempts to intervene sparked violence, resulting in stone-pelting by the protestors, which prompted police to use mild force to manage the situation, according to SSP Rakesh Kumar.

The arrested protestors face charges of clashing with police and taking the law into their own hands, as stated by the SSP. In related developments, district police attached the property of the main accused, Sanjay Rai, after he failed to surrender as mandated by court notice. Rai, who faces accusations of kidnapping the girl and coercing her family into marriage, has been evading arrest.

''We pasted a court notice on Rai's house ordering him to surrender by Saturday noon. His property was attached after he failed to comply. A search operation is ongoing, and we hope to apprehend him soon,'' the SSP added. The girl's body was discovered in a pond near her village, with her legs tied and cut marks suggesting a trowel-inflicted assault to her head, neck, and arms.
