A smuggler attacked a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan with a dagger after being intercepted near the India-Bangladesh border on Monday, according to official sources.
The incident occurred around 9 am at a banana and bamboo orchard in Vijaypur, a border district of Nadia in West Bengal. The jawan survived the attack, but the assailant managed to escape, abandoning 6 kg of smuggled gold in the process, the sources added.
The smuggler attacked the security personnel with a large knife when caught carrying 22 gold biscuits and eight gold bars in a belt around his waist. The jawan fired a single round from his rifle, but refrained from further shooting due to nearby farmers. The Border Security Force plans to hand over the seized gold to the Customs or Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
