In a fresh wave of violence in the Jammu region, a CRPF inspector was fatally shot when terrorists attacked a patrol party in Udhampur district on Monday.

The joint patrol, comprising the CRPF and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the local police, was ambushed in the remote Dudu area of Basantgarh at around 3:30 pm, according to officials.

Inspector Kuldeep Kumar, 54, from Haryana, belonging to the CRPF's 187th Battalion, was hit by a bullet and later succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital.

A police spokesman said the exchange of fire occurred during an area domination patrol at Chill village of Dudu. Kumar attained martyrdom in the encounter. The anti-terror operation is ongoing.

After a strong retaliation from the joint patrol, the terrorists fled the scene. Reinforcements have been dispatched, and a manhunt has been initiated to track down the militants.

This forested area of Basantgarh has seen multiple terror incidents since April, including the death of a village defense guard. Security agencies view this as an effort by Pakistani handlers to revive terrorism in the Jammu region.

The incident follows a recent gunfight in Doda district, which resulted in the deaths of an army captain and a heavily armed terrorist.

With this latest killing, the number of terror-related fatalities in Jammu and Kashmir this year has risen to 74, including 21 security personnel and 35 terrorists. Jammu region's six districts account for 30 of these deaths.
