A gunman fatally shot a mother and daughter, and injured another man outside a Kentucky courthouse on Monday before leading police on a highway pursuit and subsequently shooting himself, authorities reported.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Christopher Elder, is in critical condition. Erica Riley, 37, attended a court hearing in Hardin County with Elder earlier that day. They were previously in a relationship, Elizabethtown Police Chief Jeremy Thompson disclosed.

Riley's mother, 71-year-old Janet Rylee, succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a hospital. Police located Elder's vehicle and pursued him on a highway in western Kentucky before he shot himself during negotiations. Nearby schools were placed on soft lockdown until the situation was deemed isolated.
