Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Thembi Simelane, has lauded Chief Justice Raymond Zondo as a paragon of wisdom, integrity, and courage at his farewell dinner in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg. Speaking on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday night, Simelane honored Zondo's contributions as he prepares to retire at the end of August 2024, marking the end of a 27-year judicial career.
Chief Justice Zondo has been instrumental in advancing judicial transformation, leading the Labour Appeal Court through pivotal challenges, and most notably, presiding over the State Capture Commission. "Tonight, we honor a person who possesses all the virtues demanded of a judge as foretold by the ancients. A man of wisdom, tempered by experience. A man of unwavering principle and integrity. A man of humility and courage," Simelane stated.
The Minister praised Zondo's leadership during the State Capture Commission, a period she described as crucial in upholding the rule of law amidst one of the most challenging times in South Africa's democracy. "The Zondo Commission was an affirmation of our constitutional order, the rule of law, and the strength of our institutions," Simelane said, emphasizing the Commission's role in restoring public confidence and holding those responsible for state capture accountable.
Reflecting on Zondo's legacy, Simelane noted that history will remember him for his wisdom, diligence, and the high standards he set for public probity. She highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to implement the Commission's recommendations, including new legislation to prevent future instances of state capture and progress in recovering stolen funds.
As Zondo approaches his retirement, Simelane expressed confidence that his voice and counsel will continue to influence the nation. "The nation thanks you for your service. The bench, the legal fraternity, and our country are all the richer for your contribution," she concluded, wishing him well in his retirement and reaffirming the government's commitment to uphold the ethical standards he helped establish.
