At least eight migrants drowned and others are missing after their boat capsized early Thursday while attempting to cross the Drina river from Serbia into Bosnia, according to the chief of the Bosnian rescue team.

Vlada Rankic, leader of the civil defence rescue team, reported the boat overturned around 06:00 a.m. (04:00 GMT) during an illegal border crossing. 'We don’t have precise information, but eight bodies have been retrieved so far,' said Rankic at the accident site near Bratunac, Bosnia.

Rescue efforts continue for a mother and her baby, but hopes for survivors are grim. Civil defence teams, border police, divers, and firefighters are involved in the search along the forested river banks.
