In a bold statement, Philippines' Defence Minister Gilberto Teodoro labelled China as the foremost disruptor of regional peace, escalating the ongoing conflict in the South China Sea.
Addressing the annual military conference of the United States Indo-Pacific command, Teodoro affirmed Manila's unwavering stance on safeguarding its sovereignty. He called on partner nations to collectively denounce China's 'illegal actions' in the contested waters.
The South China Sea remains a vital corridor for over $3 trillion in annual maritime trade. Despite a 2016 ruling from the Permanent Court of Arbitration rejecting China's extensive claims, Beijing continues to assert its sovereignty over the area, clashing with claims from Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
