Operation Bhediya: Uttar Pradesh's Struggle Against Deadly Wolf Attacks

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched 'Operation Bhediya' to capture wolves responsible for seven deaths in Bahraich district. Utilizing drone technology, the Forest Department has apprehended three wolves. Efforts continue with 16 teams in the field, while measures like night patrolling and awareness campaigns are in place to protect residents.

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has initiated 'Operation Bhediya' to apprehend a pack of wolves that have terrorized the Mehsi tehsil in Bahraich district, resulting in seven fatalities.

Forest Department teams, utilizing advanced drone cameras and thermal mapping technology, have successfully captured three wolves. However, uncertainty remains about the total number of the predators still at large.

Principal Chief Forest Conservator (Wildlife) Sanjay Srivastava confirmed the deployment of 16 specialized teams and 12 district-level officers. Additional state support includes night patrolling and the installation of doors in homes. Local ASHA workers are spearheading awareness campaigns to ensure public safety. The Chief Wildlife Warden has authorized the tranquilization of the wolves, and officials have been vigilant in implementing protective measures.

In a show of direct involvement, Forest Minister Arun Saxena met with affected families and reassured them of continuous efforts. An ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh has been allocated to the families of four deceased individuals, with more compensations to follow. The minister advised residents to take precautions such as avoiding sleeping outdoors and moving in groups with sticks for protection.
