The Bombay High Court has provided interim protection from arrest to Shiv Sena leader Waman Mhatre, who has been accused of making derogatory remarks against a woman journalist. The court observed that the alleged comments were not intended to humiliate her on the basis of caste.
Mhatre, a member of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, had been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accusations stemmed from remarks allegedly made during protests in Badlapur over a sexual assault incident at a local school.
Justice Sandeep Marne, while granting the interim protection, indicated that Mhatre's comments appeared to target the journalist personally rather than her caste. The court is set to hear the matter further on September 4.
