Tension Escalates Between Brazil's Supreme Court and Elon Musk
The ongoing dispute between a Brazilian Supreme Court justice and Elon Musk has put social media platform X on the verge of a shutdown in Brazil. Additionally, Musk's company Starlink is seeking to unblock its financial accounts in the country. The conflict involves court orders, censorship claims, and significant financial penalties.
An escalating feud between Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk has jeopardized the future of social media platform X in Brazil. Late Thursday, X announced it might soon face a shutdown order after failing to identify a legal representative in the country.
Musk, calling the measure censorship, closed X's offices in Brazil earlier this year but kept its services running. Adding to the controversy, Brazil’s Supreme Court also froze the financial accounts of Musk's satellite internet firm Starlink to collect fines imposed on X.
In a related development, Starlink sought to unfreeze its accounts, arguing it had no involvement with X's legal issues. Meanwhile, President Lula da Silva reminded Musk that foreign investors must comply with Brazilian laws, emphasizing accountability. The U.S. Embassy also weighed in, underscoring the importance of free speech without commenting on the legal specifics.
