The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 17 Indian fishermen and confiscated their trawlers for alleged poaching within its territorial waters. This brings the total number of Indian nationals detained by Sri Lanka this year to 413, according to an official statement.

The arrests and trawler seizures occurred north of Mannar on Sunday, as part of a special operation conducted by the navy. The captured fishermen have been transported to the Talaimannar Pier, where they will be handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for further action.

The Sri Lankan Navy reported that it has detained 55 Indian fishing boats and 413 fishermen in 2024 for encroachment-related incidents. These events have strained India-Sri Lanka relations, especially with frequent reports of Lankan Navy personnel firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait, a contested but rich fishing area shared by both nations.
