In a significant development, sixteen individuals, including four women, have been apprehended in Nawabganj for allegedly attacking lekhpals, or revenue officials, police sources revealed on Thursday. The police crackdown follows the escalation of tensions as the lekhpal union entered its second day of strike.
Authorities disclosed that the incident occurred on September 30 in Ukhra village, under the jurisdiction of Nawabganj police station. The attack ensued during the demolition of unauthorized structures, with police officers present, a move that reportedly incited anger among the villagers.
The lekhpal community, however, remains disgruntled with the police measures, citing negligence and demanding the immediate suspension of the Station House Officer, Balraj Bhati. Ajit Agnihotri, district president of the lekhpal union, stated that the strike at the district headquarters will persist until their demands, which include Bhati's suspension, are addressed.
