Former British diplomat Tom Fletcher has been appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the new humanitarian chief of the United Nations.

Fletcher, who is currently serving as principal of Hertford College, Oxford, will take over from Martin Griffiths, who resigned due to health issues in June. Fletcher is recognized for his communication and public diplomacy skills in the fields of development, diplomacy, technology, and democracy.

The appointment has been welcomed by the US, which expressed eagerness for collaboration to address urgent humanitarian challenges globally, under Fletcher's leadership, including in regions like Sudan, Gaza, Haiti, and Ukraine.
