As climate-driven events such as droughts and floods increasingly disrupt agricultural production and exacerbate food insecurity across Africa, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Narend Singh, has called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to take urgent action against climate change. Speaking at the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA) Regional Conference, Singh highlighted the need for sustainable agricultural practices, enhanced irrigation, investment in research and technology, and the development of resilient crop varieties to counter climate impacts.

Addressing the theme "SADC Sustainable Synergies," Singh noted Africa's vulnerability due to its reliance on natural resources, rain-fed agriculture, and inadequate infrastructure, which make the continent particularly susceptible to climate change. He stressed that integrated environmental management tools provide a framework for balancing economic growth, environmental conservation, and social equity.

"The environmental challenges we face do not respect borders or timelines, and every day we delay, the cost to our region and our people increases," Singh stated. He emphasized that the transition towards a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy must address poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

Singh highlighted South Africa's Just Energy Transition (JET) programme as a crucial response to the climate crisis, aiming to diversify energy sources by investing in solar, wind, and green hydrogen, while reducing reliance on coal. He underscored the importance of collaboration with SADC countries to advance cross-border energy projects, technology sharing, and capacity building to mitigate climate change while promoting economic growth.

The Deputy Minister also stressed the significance of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable development. He lauded the achievements of EAPASA in facilitating collaboration among SADC members, urging the region to harmonize systems for a unified approach to environmental sustainability and development.

Singh concluded by calling on SADC to act immediately, prioritizing sustainable growth and environmental stewardship to ensure long-term benefits for future generations.
