An Italian journalist, Cecilia Sala, has been arrested in Tehran, as confirmed by state media on Monday. Accused of contravening Iranian law, her case highlights the tense political climate surrounding her detention.
According to the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Sala entered the country on December 13 on a journalist visa and was apprehended six days later, as noted by IRNA. Italy's foreign ministry is actively engaging with Iranian authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding her detention.
Speculation suggests Sala's arrest might be linked to efforts to secure the release of Mohammad Abedini-Najafabad, a detained Iranian-Swiss expert in Italy, raising concerns of a potential bargaining scenario. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized the delicate nature of the situation, expressing hopes for Sala's swift return.
