Joburg Residents Urged to Use Fireworks Responsibly on New Year

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, JMPD outlined specific conditions under which fireworks may be used. On most celebratory days, fireworks are permitted between 7 PM and 10 PM. However, on New Year’s Eve, the permissible time extends from 11 PM to 1 AM.

• Fireworks are prohibited in public places such as schools, hospitals, old age homes, and within 500 meters of petrol stations or explosives factories.

• Individuals under 16 are not permitted to handle fireworks without adult supervision.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

To enforce compliance, fines ranging from R100 to R1,500 may be imposed for violations such as:

1. Igniting fireworks near animals, hospitals, old age homes, or petrol stations.
2. Allowing minors to light fireworks without supervision.
3. Failing to secure permission for large-scale displays or violating the terms of such permissions.
4. Operating without a valid fireworks license in accordance with the Explosives Act.
