Italy has taken a firm diplomatic stance by summoning Iran's ambassador to demand the release of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, detained on charges of violating Iranian laws. The case has drawn significant attention and pressure from both government and opposition parties in Italy.
Sala, a reporter for Il Foglio, was apprehended in Tehran on December 19. Following her arrest, concerns have been raised about her treatment in detention, described as 'inhuman' by Italy's Democratic Party. Her situation also drew mention in President Sergio Mattarella's national address.
The tension is intensified by the concurrent detention of Iranian Mohammad Abedini-Najafabad in Italy, linked to a US investigation. Allegations suggest Iran may be using Sala as leverage in negotiations over Abedini's case.
