The Russian rouble experienced a significant surge, climbing over 2% against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday. This uptick comes in the wake of a diplomatic agreement between Russia and the United States, which facilitated the release of an American school teacher detained in Russia.
By 0750 GMT, the rouble appreciated by 2.1% to reach 94.50 against the dollar, marking its strongest performance since October 2024. The currency also exhibited gains against China's yuan, strengthening by 1.2% to 12.93 on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
Denis Popov of PSB bank noted that the promising reduction in geopolitical tensions significantly supports the rouble's performance. Investor sentiment appears to be buoyed by this development, potentially fostering favorable conditions for the Russian economy.
