The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stepped in to address illegal encroachments that are disrupting the natural flow of the Luni river in Gujarat's Rann of Kutch. The NGT has formed a committee to survey the area and identify those responsible for the damage.

The tribunal's Western zonal bench, based in Pune, issued orders on February 5, directing a newly constituted committee to visit the site and assess the damages. The committee includes members from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), Kutch District Collector, and the Central Ground Water Board. They are tasked to submit their findings within one month.

This action follows a plea by Kanaiyalal Rajgor, who highlighted the illegal construction of salt pits and borewells in the Great and Little Rann of Kutch, which have obstructed the river's flow. The obstructions are particularly concerning as they affect the critically endangered wildlife in the area, leading to a call for immediate intervention.
