The Maharashtra government has decided to extend the term of the Justice (retd) Sandeep Shinde committee until June 30, 2025. This extension follows an agitation by Manoj Jarange, who advocated for eligible Marathas to receive Kunbi caste certificates to qualify for OBC reservations.
Formed under the leadership of Eknath Shinde in September 2023, the panel's previous term expired on December 31, 2024. The committee is tasked with scrutinizing historical records from the former Hyderabad and Bombay states, with the objective of categorizing Marathas as Kunbis.
This extension arises amidst opposition from existing OBC leaders, who express concerns that including Marathas might reduce reservation opportunities for current OBC communities. The committee's scope has also been broadened from just Marathwada to encompass the entire state of Maharashtra.
