The February 9 encounter in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, marked a significant blow to Naxal leadership as 31 ultras were killed, including the notorious Hunga Karma. Karma was behind several deadly attacks, such as the January 6 IED blast that claimed nine lives, including eight security personnel.

The encounter took place in the sensitive Indravati National Park area, where two jawans also lost their lives. This operation exposed the scale of Naxal activities, as Karma had been involved in numerous attacks since joining the Maoists in 1996, with a significant bounty on his head.

Efforts continue to identify the bodies of the remaining ultras killed. So far in 2023, security forces have neutralized 81 Naxalites, including 65 in the Bastar division, recovering a cache of firearms and further weakening Naxal influence in the region.
