The Department of Posts proudly announces the release of a commemorative souvenir sheet featuring three postage stamps dedicated to the Maha Kumbh 2025. This grand unveiling took place at Arail Ghat Post Office, Prayagraj, and was graced by the presence of Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Hon’ble Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region.

In addition to the souvenir sheet, the Department of Posts has released an array of philatelic items, including special covers and cancellations for sacred Snan days. The collection also features ‘Divya, Bhavya, and Digital Mahakumbh’ releases, along with a picturesque postcard celebrating ‘Prakhyat Prayagraj.’ These initiatives highlight the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of Maha Kumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

Mythological Significance of Kumbh Mela

The origins of the Kumbh Mela trace back to Hindu mythology. According to the ancient scriptures, during the celestial event of Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) struggled over Amrit, the nectar of immortality. In the battle, drops of this divine nectar fell at four sacred locations—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. These sites became the revered grounds for Kumbh Mela. The Maha Kumbh occurs once every 144 years in Prayagraj, making it a momentous occasion of unparalleled religious, cultural, and historical significance.

The Three Stamps – A Glimpse into Triveni Tirtha

The stamps featured in this special edition draw inspiration from the verse:

त्रिवेणीं माधवं सोमं भरद्वाजं च वासुकिम्।

वन्दे अक्षयवटं शेष प्रयागं तीर्थनायकम।

Designed by Shri Sankha Samanta, the commemorative postage stamps beautifully illustrate three prominent aspects of Triveni Tirtha:

  1. Maharshi Bharadwaj Ashram: A renowned center of knowledge and learning during the era of Rishi Bharadwaj. The ashram is also mentioned in the Ramayana, where Shri Ram, Mata Sita, and Laxman visited during their Vanvas.

  2. Snan at Triveni Sangam: The sacred act of taking a holy dip in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. Millions of devotees participate in this ritual, believing that it cleanses sins and grants Moksha (liberation).

  3. Akshayvat – The Eternal Banyan Tree: The legendary tree under which Shri Ram, Mata Sita, and Laxman are believed to have rested. Ancient texts claim that Akshayvat remains unshaken even during cosmic dissolution (pralay).
