High Court Targets Speeding: Young Drivers Under Scrutiny

The Uttarakhand High Court addressed a serious public interest litigation (PIL) about accidents from speeding. The court called for the implementation of road sensors to notify police and families when drivers exceed speed limits. The case emphasizes young drivers' role in accidents and suggests stricter age limits for certain vehicles.

The Uttarakhand High Court took a firm stance on a concerning public safety issue, hearing a PIL focused on traffic accidents caused by speeding vehicles. The court, led by Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendar and Justice Ashish Naithani, demanded IG Traffic, Garhwal, to be physically present at the next hearing set for February 20.

A key proposal from the court involves installing road sensors that would alert the driver's family and police when a vehicle exceeds speed limits, facilitating timely issuance of challans. The bench stressed the grave nature of the issue and explored technological solutions to curb speeding.

The PIL, lodged by Advocate Lalit Miglani, also targeted young drivers, highlighting their significant role in traffic incidents. It proposed raising the legal driving age for vehicles with engines between 1000 to 2000 CC to 25 years, citing current regulations for smaller vehicles driven by younger individuals. This measure aligns with the need for enhanced road safety in the region's mountainous landscape.
