United Nations experts have issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s continued violations of the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon, urging an immediate end to military operations, housing demolitions, and attacks on civilians. The experts demand full compliance with the ceasefire terms, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from South Lebanon.

The ceasefire, effective since 27 November 2024, mandated the withdrawal of Israeli troops from South Lebanon within 60 days. However, Israel missed the initial deadline of 26 January 2025, with its military maintaining a presence and escalating attacks on returning Lebanese civilians. According to UN figures, at least 57 civilians have been killed and 260 properties destroyed since the ceasefire began.

On 26 January 2025, during attempts by displaced Lebanese civilians to return to their homes, Israeli soldiers opened fire, resulting in 24 deaths and 120 injuries. In the days following, violent confrontations continued, with two more civilians killed and 80 injured.

The UN experts highlighted severe violations of international humanitarian law, including the killing of displaced persons, destruction of property, and denial of safe return for civilians. They also expressed grave concerns over the use of white phosphorus munitions, unexploded ordnance, and booby-trapped homes, which pose ongoing threats to returning families.

“We are appalled by the continued targeting of civilians and the destruction of vital infrastructure during what should be a period of peace under the ceasefire,” the experts stated. “These acts are clear violations of international law and must stop immediately.”

The experts called on Israel to immediately lift all restrictions on the movement of Lebanese civilians and facilitate their safe return to their homes. Additionally, they urged Israel to provide compensation or reparations for destroyed properties and ensure the removal of hazardous explosives from residential areas.

The experts reiterated their previous concerns about the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict, including mass displacement, destruction of essential services, and environmental damage. They stressed that adherence to international law is crucial to resolving the crisis and protecting civilian lives.

The United Nations continues to monitor the situation closely and urges all parties to respect the ceasefire agreement to prevent further loss of life and suffering among civilians.
