Videos showed Matar, 27, rushing the Chautauqua Institution's stage as Rushdie was introduced to talk about writer safety. Rushdie, 77, was stabbed multiple times, causing severe injuries requiring surgery and prolonged recovery.

Matar was convicted of attempted murder and assault. He also faces federal charges for attempted terrorism. Despite the defense's argument against proven criminal intent, Matar's actions were deemed a violent response to personal grievances against Rushdie and exiled writers.
